One of our most enigmatic ingredients yet - Palo Santo is the master botanical used in the blend of which it’s eponymously named. Palo Santo is a native South American tree of healing, prosperity and spiritual protection. Literally translated to ‘Holy Wood’, the potent aroma of Palo Santo is unmistakable, and the effects of its fragrant and oil-saturated heartwood are profound and mysterious.

Palo Santo has a rich cultural history dating all the way back to the Incan Empire. It’s been used across time by the indigenous people of South America up until today as a smoking wood used in sacred ceremonies as a way to purify, cleanse, and protect the spirit.

We first encountered Palo Santo during our travels to Peru, which is where we found our supplier on the banks of the Tumbes River in the Corrales District. Here, they honour and respect the spirit of Palo Santo by only harvesting its wood from naturally fallen trees. Once fallen, the trees are left to age for 4 to 5 years to yield the most intense oil before the timber is cut-away. We source our Palo Santo in chunks which are then ground over 9 days to produce an edible and elevated blend.

Palo Santo has a strong effect on the mind and nervous system, helping to relieve stress, anxiety, panic attacks, headaches, and depression. Is abundance of terpenoids and limonene attribute the wood with its strong antidepressant actions. Limonene also gives Palo Santo potent antimicrobial properties and the ability to oxygenate the brain, leading to an elevated mental state.

Traditionally, Palo Santo is used to kill bacteria, viruses and parasites. It’s also frequently used as a treatment of common respiratory ailments such as colds, flus, allergies, and asthma.
